Polyurethane or epoxy floors: which to use where
Epoxy and polyurethane self-leveling floors are the two most popular industrial coatings over concrete. They are often confused and chosen “by price”, although they are materials with a different character: one is harder and more chemically resistant, the other more elastic and UV-resistant. Let us look at the differences and where each is appropriate.
Epoxy floors: character
Strengths:
- high hardness, strength and abrasion resistance;
- good chemical resistance (to a range of acids, alkalis, oils — depends on the system);
- dust-free, hygienic, excellent adhesion to prepared concrete.
Weaknesses:
- rigidity — handles vibration, deformation and substrate cracking less well;
- sensitivity to ultraviolet — in direct sun pure epoxy yellows and chalks;
- demands on substrate moisture during application.
Polyurethane floors: character
Strengths:
- elasticity — copes with vibration, deformation and fine cracking;
- UV resistance — does not yellow, suitable for lit and open areas;
- impact resistance and resistance to temperature swings; polyurethane-cement systems work in wet and hot workshops and in food production (hot-water and steam washing);
- good abrasion resistance.
Weaknesses:
- usually more expensive than epoxy;
- resistance to some aggressive media may be lower than epoxy;
- more demanding on application technology.
Where to use each
- Epoxy: dry warehouses and workshops, enclosed car parks, high mechanical and chemical load, where maximum hardness and chemical resistance are needed and there is no direct sun.
- Polyurethane: rooms with vibration and deformation, lit and open areas, temperature swings, wet and food production (polyurethane-cement), where elasticity and impact resistance matter.
- Combined system: an epoxy base + a polyurethane top coat — the strength and chemical resistance of epoxy below and the UV resistance and elasticity of polyurethane on top. A common practical solution.
Common selection factors
The type and intensity of the load, chemical exposure, the presence of sun and lighting, the moisture and temperature of the substrate and the service environment, hygiene and slip-resistance requirements, budget and deadlines. For both types substrate preparation is equally critical — without it neither epoxy nor polyurethane will hold. For details on self-leveling epoxy floors and selecting a system for the load, see the article on self-leveling epoxy floors for warehouses and workshops.
Common mistakes
- epoxy outdoors or in direct sun — yellowing and loss of appearance;
- ignoring concrete moisture — coating delamination;
- cutting costs on substrate preparation;
- a system not matched to the load — rapid wear.
