Polyurea waterproofing: roof, foundation, tank

Polyurea is a two-component hot-spray polymer coating that forms a continuous seamless membrane within seconds. Thanks to its high elasticity, strength and fast cure it is used where ordinary brush-applied or sheet waterproofing cannot cope or takes too long to install. Let us look at where polyurea is genuinely justified and where a simpler solution is enough.

Where polyurea is used as waterproofing

  • roofs — flat, trafficable and of complex geometry;
  • foundations and underground structures;
  • tanks, vessels, settling basins and treatment facilities (in detail — in a separate article on the internal surfaces of RC tanks);
  • floors in wet and aggressive areas, car parks, balconies, bridge structures.

Roofing

Advantages of polyurea on a roof:

  • seamless — no joints or overlaps, and it is exactly those that most often leak;
  • elasticity — bridges thermal movement and cracks in the substrate;
  • fast cure — the coating comes into service quickly, installation does not drag on for weeks;
  • high adhesion to concrete, metal and prepared bituminous substrates (with the right primer).

A caveat: pure polyurea does not tolerate prolonged ultraviolet (it may change colour and chalk), so on exposed roofs a UV-resistant protective top coat is applied over it. The solution suits trafficable roofs, roofs of complex shape and the refurbishment of old roofs.

Foundations and underground structures

Foundation waterproofing protects the concrete and reinforcement from ground moisture and pressurised water. Polyurea forms a continuous elastic barrier resistant to cracking of the substrate. It is applied over a prepared and primed concrete; for damp substrates compatible primers are selected. Before backfilling the coating is usually protected with geotextile or a protective layer. It works well together with penetrating (crystalline) waterproofing, which densifies the concrete itself from within.

Tanks and vessels

For the internal surfaces of reinforced-concrete tanks, settling basins and treatment facilities, polyurea is one of the main solutions. In detail — materials, selection by medium, drinking-water requirements — in a separate article on waterproofing the internal surfaces of RC tanks.

When polyurea is justified and when it is not

Justified: large areas and tight deadlines; complex geometry; moving substrates and a risk of cracking; aggressive media and abrasion; critical structures where joints are unacceptable.

Simpler will do: small dry rooms, plain substrates without deformation, a limited budget — there a brush-applied cement-polymer or a sheet/membrane waterproofing is enough. An honest choice saves money — we will advise what your task really needs.

Installation features

  1. Substrate preparation: dust removal, removal of the weak layer (grinding or shot-blasting), repair of cracks and voids, roughening.
  2. Control of substrate moisture; for damp concrete — compatible primers.
  3. Priming — a mandatory step for the coating to bond to the substrate.
  4. Spraying with special two-component heated equipment; the work is carried out by a trained crew.
  5. Control of coating thickness and continuity.
  6. For exposed surfaces — a UV-resistant protective top coat.

What to consider when choosing

Operating conditions (ultraviolet, temperature, chemicals, abrasion, mechanical loads), the type and state of the substrate, access for equipment, deadline requirements. These determine the grade of the material, the coating thickness and whether a top coat is needed.
